HOW TO ATTEMPT A READ ALOUD
READ ALOUD is considered as the crucial task of PTE, not only because it is easier to attempt but also it comprises of the maximum weightage of marks in PTE preceding repeat sentences and write from dictations. Moreover, it’s weightage of approximately 44 marks are fragmented into two sections reading and speaking because we’re reading and then we’re speaking. However, some students still found it difficult to perform due to several reasons that I’ll discuss later in this article.
Task Description
You will get a context of 60-70 words on screen for which you will be given 40 seconds to analyze it and after 40 seconds recording will start and you have to speak it in the same manner as it was written on screen.
Given below a picture shows how the task look alike:
HOW MARKING IS DONE
Read aloud is marked on the basis of three criteria
FLUENCY | 0-5 |
PRONUNCIATION | 0-5 |
CONTENT | HOW MUCH YOU SPEAK |
- FLUENCY RANGES FROM 0 TO 5
- PRONUNCIATION RANGES FROM 0 TO 5
- CONTENT : DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH CONTEXT YOU HAVE COVERED
HOW TO ATTEMPT IT OR HOW TO GET FULL MARKS IN ALL THESE CRITERIA FOR FLUENCY:
you need to speak in flow i.e in NORMAL PACE not in rapid manner. Some students have this myth that if they’ll speak in fast pace then there will be less chances of mistakes. However, the reality is opposite if you speak in fast manner then microphone will not be able to record your voice and your score for fluency and pronunciation both will go low.
What exactly you have to do
- Speak in NORMAL PACE without hesitation
- Avoid pauses
- Avoid self-correction
- Avoid self-repetition
- Take proper stress on keywords
FOR PRONUNCIATION
For getting full 5 marks in pronunciation you need to focus on correct pronunciation of the words. When we get 40 seconds to analyze the text just skip it and check out the tough words that you found difficult to pronounce break it into 2-3 fragments and then pronounce it 5 times in your brain FOR INSTANCE : suppose there is a word called “ASTROPHYSICISTS”break it into 2-3 chunks like “astro”,“physi”,“cists”.
Secondly, what you can do to improve your pronunciation is whenever, You are practicing. Make a list of words and search their pronunciation on google and memorize them. One more method(actually it’s my own method) is there through which you can improve your pronunciation skill although the method is weird ( I, myself follow this method on my students) what you have to do is write the word in your notebook and then write its correct pronunciation front of it in hindi or in any other language in which you guys are comfortable. I know it’s sounds funny but in 90% cases it works. I am sharing one illustration of it how you have to do that
For content:
For content scan the text properly find out the plural words and speak them properly. Try that you don’t skip any word and cover the whole text. Because if you’ll skip words then not only it will affect your speaking score but will also decrease your reading score. So attempt it properly in addition to it speak clearly.
Points to remember
- Avoid repetition,self-correction
- Speak in the way by assuming as you are giving a presentation in front of many people
- Try to cover maximum content
- Speak normally and in lucid manner
- Last but not the least, enjoy while reading I mean don’t consider it as burden try to enjoy it while speaking
